  2. Tip: How to encourage exploration on your site

YouTube has added a really nice touch to their site that encourages people to explore and view other videos. This has the obvious financial benefit to them of increasing video and page views, thus increasing advertising revenue.

  3. When you fail, it’s time to try again

No one is successful 100% of the time. Just look at entreprenuers like Richard Branson (founder of Virgin) and Milton Hershey (founder of Hershey’s Chocolate). They are (were) both extremely succesful and yet they’ve also had some spectacular failures (remember Virgin Brides?).

Thankfully we’ve enjoyed a couple successful ideas here at […]

  4. The fastest and most reliable backup drives (via Twitter!)

The other day I asked this question on Twitter (twitter.com/ryancarson):

“My sis is looking for an affordable, but fast and reliable backup drive for her Mac. Suggestions? Is Firewire or USB faster these days?”

  1. Start-up Clinic #

    I’ll be doing a 1-day workshop for anyone building a start-up. It’s Dec 12th at Carsonifed HQ, and there’s only 12 seats.

Leaving your 9 to 5 to launch your own company is exciting but a bit scary - especially with the current financial climate. However, downturns in the market are always the best time to start a company, and we can give you the advice you need to succeed. With everything riding on your success you need to make sure that you have the best advice from the folks who’ve done it all before - that’s where Start-up Clinic comes in.

    Hope you can make it!

  4. SXSW Panel Picker #

I recently found out that I was lucky enough (Thanks Hugh) to have a panel proposal chosen to go forward to the 2009 South by South West (SXSW) Interactive Panel Picker. My panel is called “Build a better team through web app development”. Here’s some background about the idea.

In July 2008 we spent four days building a Twitter mash up web app called “The Mattinator” using a web framework we had never used before (Django). We conducted the challenge publicly and blogged about each days progress daily. At the beginning of the week we weren’t sure if we would achieve our goals.

Ultimately the app did launch and we managed to get a post on TechCrunch talking about our project. We learnt a lot of things, both positive and negative. The aim of this panel is to talk about our experiences openly and explain why we feel building a web app in a short space of time will reap rewards for your company.

  5. Facebook platform opens up… #

Facebook recently announced Facebook Connect which is the next iteration of Facebook Platform that allows users to “connect” their Facebook identity, friends and privacy to any site.

This latest development will enable users to log into 3rd party sites using their Facebook log in details and also to see which of their other Facebook friends are already using the site, among many other benefits.

Dave Morin , Senior Platform Manager, confirmed Digg to be the first partner using Facebook Connect and we’re sure many more will follow suit.
