FOWA + Carsonified Relaunch + diggnation = Rad
The first day of FOWA was a blast. I’m so proud of our team – especially Mel. She’s done an amazing job organizing the conference.
The quality of the speakers, the new companies on the expo floor, meeting new friends and the live diggnation show were such a fun combination. I’ve never had so many people shake my hand and thank me for putting on a conference! It was amazing.
diggnation was so fun. Kevin and Alex were on fire and we had over 1,200 people packed into the auditorium! It was like a rock concert. I still can’t believe it – crazy. Check out all the photos on flickr.

After diggnation we threw the official Carsonified re-launch party and packed out the bar.
On to Day 2!

FOWA 2007 day one was awesome. Before that fateful night, I’d never even heard of Diggnation – now I’m a complete fan.
Great event guys – and massive thanks to the Alex and Kevin for putting such a tremendously funny show on.

Well done to everyone on the Carsonified team, you all did a great job. You picked some great people, let them talk about some great topics and did a great job making sure everything was well run and presented. Can I say the word great any more times?!

Congratulations Ryan, you (and your team) put on a great event.
One thing that I really hadn’t anticipated was the excellent soundtrack, who was responsible for the choices? I want a FOWA OST!

Future Of Web Apps: First Impressions :: Unintentionally Blank

[...] I was at the Future of Web Apps conference today, enjoying the sights and insights of today’s web apps and their creators. I had a really great day, only wishing that I’d made it to the conference, the diggnation filming and the Carsonified party yesterday. The whole day gave me a lot to think about, so here is what I got up to and my first impressions of my first conference. [...]

Please excuse my rant but designers who don’t test sites on PC’s and IE before they launch [to quote family guy] “really grind my gears”.
Windows IE 6:
* Front Page to short and cuts off half of your “Flickr” images.
* Background images in divs sporadic at best i.e. you never see the speech bubble around the comments count.
* The textured grey background on top of the laminated floor effect doesn’t display – as with the footer background it’s just a solid block.
* The icon images in the comments overlay the next set of comments.
* The number of comments in the, non existent, speech bubble overlaps the word comments.
* The line height on the blog titles cause hanging letter “q, y, p, g & j” to be cut off.
Windows IE 7:
* Better but the div width’s and heights are still all over the place – the header in particular has the logo on the right hand side, obscured behind the “Welcome to our new site” graphic.
PC’s running IE make up almost 85% of your potential clients and your denying them your intended experience!
This is your shop front – would you launch a site for your clients before it’s finished?

Thanks for all your comments, everyone! We’re so chuffed that you guys had a great time – we did too!
@GC: Thanks for taking the time to point out the errors. However, we’re aware of all of them and I’m in the process of fixing one at a time, hence the “please bear with us while we iron out the creases and apply the final layer of polish” message. We’d never intentionally alientate any of our audience; however, as IE users make up a relatively small percentage of our userbase, we decided to fix as we go.

A tip of my (imaginary) hat to Ryan and the team. You guys have really pulled off a great conference, and left vast numbers of people with a good, positive buzz about web apps, startups and growing communities.
I think we all underestimated how popular the entrepreneur track was going to be, but aside from that, what a great event.
Great thinking to invite the Diggnation guys, I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time and, having met Alex & the Totally Rad Show guys, they’re top blokes!
See you in a month at Future of Mobile!

Loving the new site guys. You did a great job on it. I am going to have make over to your side the world for one of your conferences one of these days. The good news is I will be able to make it too SXSW this year. Hope to see you all there!

And major congratulations on relaunching as Carsonified. I love it! The best to you and all your wonderful employees (shout outs to Mel and Lisa!)

Guys, thanks for all of your kind words – it makes all of the work that goes into the event worthwhile and I can’t tell you how good it was to catch up with you in person!!
Hopefully the next FOWA will be Miami in February and then back to London again for the same week in October next year – bring it on :)

FOWA was very cool, although I am a little sad now as I couldn’t make it until the 2nd day, from the sounds of it I missed out on a lot! I will make sure I attend all of it next time.
